Central spoils senior night for Gate City

  Wise Central continued to stay on their recent tear Friday night as they piled up 410 yards on offense to upend the Blue Devils 35-21 in a playoff like atmosphere at Legion Field in Gate City. Gate City (4-6, 2-4) came in to Fridays contest with a three game winning streak while Central (7-2, 4-2) had recorded three straight wins themselves. Gate City uses big first half to put away Generals

Gate City continued their offensive outburst against the Lee High Generals last Friday night at Legion Field in Gate City. After scoring 55 points against Marion a week before, the Blue Devils defeated the Generals 51-27, with 45 of those points coming in the first half. Michael Calhoun, D’Andre Mack, Luke Reed and Carson Jenkins all scored touchdowns in the first quarter as Gate City led 25-0 after the first period.… Read the rest

Gate City aims to keep Lee High winless

  Lee High beating Gate City on the football field is something that hasjust not came easy. The Generals have defeated the Blue Devils just one time in the last 15 years. That victory came in 2017 at Legion Field in Gate City, a 35-0 tail whipping of the Blue Devils. Lee High (0-6, 0-2) is still looking for their first win of the season, while Gate City (2-5, 0-3) is battling for playoff seeding and looking for their first Mountain 7 victory of the year.… Read the rest

Bears use quick start to stave off Blue Devils

With two big games looming in the coming weeks, it would have been easy for Union to overlook a one win Gate City team. The Bears, however, were quick to apply pressure to the Blue Devils. Two first quarter touchdowns and a 21-0 lead at halftime proved to be enough to propel Union to a 28-14 victory on homecoming night at Bullitt Park. “One game at a time. Bears prepared to face much improved Gate City

Gate City made a splash throughout Southwest Virginia in week 1 with a 34-29 victory over Richlands at Ernie Hicks Stadium. Since then the Blue Devils (1-3, 0-2) have cooled down a bit. Coach Jeremy Houseright’s team took Abingdon down to the wire in week 2 but since have suffered two lopsided defeats. Wolfpack down Blue Devils 42-7

Most patrons who showed up at the Ridge on Friday night were expecting a closely contested game between Ridgeview and Gate City. The Blue Devils looked to grind it out on the ground, sustaining long drives and playing keep away from the high powered Ridgeview Wolfpack offense.  The strategy was all for naught, however as the Wolfpack defense stymied the Blue Devils and the offense was churning on all cylinders in a dominant 42-7 final tally.… Read the rest

Chris Akers resigns at Gate City after three seasons

The Gate City Blue Devils finished the 2018 football season Thursday night with a disappointing loss to the Wise Central Warriors in overtime.  As it turns out, the contest was the last for Chris Akers as the head coach for the Blue Devils.  Akers resigned his post officially on Monday, finishing his tenure at the helm of the Devils with a 7-24 record, which includes back to back 1-9 seasons. The 2016 season was respectable for Gate City with Akers leading the charge. … Read the rest

Warriors outlast Blue Devils in OT thriller

The Gate City Blue Devils and Wise Central Warriors came into Thursday night’s Mountain 7 district contest with similar agendas.  The Blue Devils wanted to close out a disappointing season with a victory.  The Warriors needed a victory desperately to stay in contention for a playoff spot in Region 2D.  Central came from two scores behind to defeat the Devils by the tally of 22-21 in an overtime thriller at Central Warrior Stadium on Thursday night.… Read the rest
