Cumberland Teams Look to Dethrone Burton

John. I Burton Raiders  Last seasons record – (10-3)  The J.I. Burton Raiders return 15 starters from last years Region 1D runner-up team. That team was led on both sides of the ball by Cumberland District Player of the Year Mikey Culbertson. Culbertson was also the Region 1D Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the VHSL All State first team. Tiller Named Head Coach of Wolfpack

Todd Tiller was named the new head football coach at Ridgeview High School on April 20th.  Tiller becomes the second head coach in Wolfpack history, succeeding Rick Mullins at the helm of the school in Dickenson County. Mullins retired following a successful tenure, leading the Pack to four playoff campaigns in five seasons. Union’s Mason Polier signs on dotted line to continue football career at UVA Wise

Fans who spent their Friday nights at Bullitt Park will now be able to make the 17 mile trek from Big Stone Gap to Carl Smith Stadium in Wise to watch Mason Polier on Saturday afternoons for the UVA Wise Cavaliers. The 6’2 220 pound Polier, who starred on both sides of the ball for Union as a running back and linebacker, signed with Wise on February 5th at Union High School.… Read the rest

Undefeated Narrows to host Grayson County

Photo Credit – Chris Lang The Narrows Green Wave have rolled through the 2019 regular season with ease. In his 17th year as the head coach of the Wave, Kelly Lowe has led his team to a 10-0 record. That marks the first undefeated season since 1979 for the team that calls Ragsdale Field home. But that’s not the only milestone that Narrows has reached this year. Richlands cruises past Virginia High, rolls into playoffs

Richlands scored early and often, dispatching the Virginia High Bearcats 59-21. The Blues (6-4, 4-1) used a prolific offensive attack that accounted for 539 yards of offense to run past the Bearcats (1-9, 1-4). While the Bearcats’ season ends, Richlands blows into the playoffs as the 5 seed in the Class 2D bracket. Playing on senior night, quarterback Cade Simmons went 6-10 for 138 yards with three total touchdowns on the night.… Read the rest

Union, Gate City set to add new chapter to rivalry

Back in late September Union jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and held on in the second half for a 28-14 win over Gate City and sent the Blue Devils to their fourth straight loss after opening up the season with a 34-29 victory over Richlands. Gate City played the game without playmakers Carson Jenkins and D’Andre Mack while Union had a healthy Zavier Lomax. Fast forward to November and Gate City has gained Jenkins and Mack while Union is without Lomax who was injured the following week against Paintsville.… Read the rest

Ridgeview defeats Honaker, clinches top seed in Region 2D

The Ridgeview Wolfpack football team had one thing on their minds on Friday night.  Defeat Honaker and clinch the top seed in the Class 2, Region D playoffs.  The outcome was never in doubt. The Wolfpack scored early and often over the course of the game’s first half and demolished the Honaker Tigers 61-14.  Ridgeview scored on its first three offensive plays and their first nine possessions overall. Big second half propels Burton past Pioneers in Cumberland clinching victory

Nick Johnsons Pioneers gave Burton all they could handle in the first half of last Fridays Cumberland matchup in Ewing. 28 unanswered, second half points allowed the Raiders to clinch their fourth Cumberland District championship and second in as many years as they raced past Thomas Walker 44-6. Burton held Thomas Walker to 137 total yards of offense and Burton racked up 424 yards of total offense, 306 of those on the ground.… Read the rest
