Warriors dispatch Maroon Tide on way to state championship game

Unfinished business.  Those two words have been the mantra for the Chilhowie Warriors football team in 2018.  Those words are in reference to the quest for a state championship for the small Smyth County school.  A season ago, the Warriors came up one game short in that quest, a 42-0 loss to Riverheads in the class 1 championship game.  The Warriors will get a second chance to conquer the quest after a 28-7 victory over the Galax Maroon Tide on Saturday.… Read the rest

This season, the folks at Coalfield Sports picked five of the most intriguing matchups in the area to be the games of the week before the fans selected THE game of the week. CoalfieldSports.com DPOTW Round 2: Galax’s Cade Ashworth

Success isn’t anything new for the Galax Maroon Tide. Since former NFL player & University of Virginia standout Mark Dixon took over at the helm in 2010, the Maroon Tide have averaged 10 wins per year. In his nine seasons Dixon’s teams have made the final four an astounding five times, with two state championship appearances and one title win. Galax thumps Narrows in Region C rematch

In 2017, the Region 1C championship between the Maroon Tide and Green Wave was a nail-bitter that ended with a 28-27 Galax victory. The two met up again in this year’s regional championship, but the Maroon Tide had control of this game before it even hit halftime. Galax (11-2) racked up 402 yards of total offense and held Narrows (10-3) to just 67 total yards of offense. Blake Brown rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Maroon Tide over the Green Wave 55-0.… Read the rest

Maroon Tide, Green Wave set for Region C rematch

This time last year, Galax and Narrows were preparing to go to battle for the Region 1C championship. In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Maroon Tide escaped Ragsdale Field with a 28-27 victory over the Green Wave. After rolling their first two opponents in this post season, Galax (10-2) and Narrows (10-2) will meet again for the region championship, however, this year Narrows will travel to Galax.… Read the rest

Brown, Vaught lead Galax past the Maroons

The saying, ‘It’s hard to beat the same team twice,’ was not the case for the Maroon Tide. After escaping with a 21-14 victory in week seven, Galax blasted the Maroons 42-14 in the post season rematch. Blake Brown and Caxton Vaught combined for 349 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lead top-seeded Galax (10-2) over George Wythe (7-5). After forcing the Maroon Tide to go three-and-out on their first possession, GW quarterback Cole Simmons marched the Maroons into Galax territory.… Read the rest

SHADES OF MAROON: George Wythe set for battle with Galax

As teams advance to the second round of the regional playoffs, the games start getting tougher. You also begin to see multiple rematches take place. This week, Galax (9-2) and George Wythe (7-4), two powerhouse programs from Region 1C, will battle for the second time this season. Galax won the first meeting in week seven, 21-14.
