Richlands uses late burst to push past upset-minded Pioneers

It was far from pretty, but Richlands scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to escape from Lebanon with a Southwest District win. Coming off a rivalry loss to Graham, Richlands (5-4, 3-1) found themselves in the middle of a tie ballgame early in the final quarter. Trojans Hold Off Bearcats to Break Streak

In a game filled with turnovers, penalties, and some anxiety at the end, the John Battle Trojans held off the Virginia High Bearcats Friday night to win against their arch rival for the first time in five years. The win also gave new head coach Bradley Ricker his first victory at the helm of John Battle. Trojans v.s. Bearcats in City/County Bowl

Cunningham scores last year against the Bearcats For years, one of the most storied rivalries in Bristol has been Virginia High versus John Battle. The first meeting was in 1963 and they have played each other 57 times with Virginia High dominating the series. John Battle has not won in the series since 2013. This year the Bearcats will come to Trojan Field with both teams coming off huge losses. Tazewell Humbles Virginia High 55-14

EMORY, Va. — After losing a substantial amount of production to graduation, most Bearcat fans knew the 2019 campaign had the potential to start on shaky ground.  Few expected the onslaught that Tazewell unleashed Friday night. After the Bristol Pirates clinched their first playoff berth in 17 years, it was announced that the game would be moved to the new turf at Emory and Henry’s Fred Selfe Stadium. In their first home game away from Gene Malcolm Stadium since 1971, the Cats’ defense was torched by Tazewell’s rushing attack to the tune of 473 yards and a 55-14 setback The three-headed monster of Chancellor Harris, Josiah Jordan, and new quarterback Gavin Nunley (who took the reigns after Jamir Blevins transferred to Bluefield) gave the young Virginia High defense fits all night.… Read the rest

Graham hosts Virginia High in Region D quarterfinals

The lone Saturday game in the opening round of the Class 2, Region D playoffs features a Week 8 rematch between the Graham G-Men (9-1) and the Virginia High Bearcats (5-5). The first contest between the two teams back in October, saw Cam Allen lead the G-Men to a 44-7 rout of the Bearcats. Allen tallied four total touchdowns as Graham turned in a dominate second half performance in the blowout win, after leading 16-0 at halftime.… Read the rest

Richlands prevails in Bristol, defeats Virginia High in overtime

Exhale. That’s what a collective fanbase did after the excitement of a thrilling overtime game had faded from Gene Malcolm Stadium. Staring down the uprights, Levi “Fle” Forrest had missed his three previous attempts, including an attempt at a game winner just moments earlier. This one was true, however, and it lifted Richlands to a 17-14 victory over Southwest District foe Virginia on senior night. Bearcats host Blue Tornado in key SWD clash

Friday night at Gene Malcolm Stadium will be a night of emotion and reflection for the Virginia High seniors and their families as the Bearcats welcome the Richlands Blue Tornado on senior night. It will also be a night that features a matchup between two teams that many people consider to be darkhorses as we approach the Region 2D playoffs next week.
