THE END OF AN ERA: Richlands’ Greg Mance to coach at Loris (SC)

Over the course of his 23-year tenure as the head coach at Richlands, Greg Mance never failed to leave his team with a simple message before they took the field on a Friday night. “What is the last thing I tell you every Friday night?” The teenage clad of blue and white immediately shouted back. “HAVE FUN!” Mance echoed his team’s exclamation. “To have fun.” It goes without saying that over the past 23 football seasons in Richlands, the entire town, school, team and coaching staff has had fun.… Read the rest

Richlands stuffed by Graham defense, look to rebound in Lebanon

There were fireworks. There was electricity in the air. And there was the Graham defense. The G-Men shut down a surging Richlands offensive attack, blowing past the Blue Tornado 37-10. Graham (6-2) started quick behind a touchdown run from ODU-commit Devin Lester. But soon after, Lester was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The validity of the flag — and the ensuing ejection — depends on which end of Tazewell County you reside.… Read the rest

Bears Use Old School Ground and Pound to Run by Blue Tornado

On a night where the 1994 Appalachia Bulldogs state championship team was honored at halftime, it was Travis Turners Union Bears who had the crowd reminiscing about the grit and grind rushing attack from the days at Riggs Stadium. “We done a lot of things very similar to that 94 team,” noted Coach Turner. “We got big, physical backs that run hard and block well for each other and when you have three or four that you can hand the ball to and you’re comfortable handing it to, it helps.” The biggest play in the first half came after Unions first possession of the ballgame when Richlands’ Colton Medley squeaked through to block Unions punt inside the Bears twenty yard line.… Read the rest

It’s football season. 2018 was a bounce-back year for the Blues, turning out an 8-5 record and a berth in the regional title game. That comes just a year after a 4-7 campaign. The 2019 Blue Tornado are hoping to get back a running game this season, something that could help a new starting quarterback.… Read the rest
