The Bluefield Beavers traveled to Wheeling Island Stadium with hopes of defending their state title and becoming the first team in school history to win back-to-back titles.
The Polar Bears of Fairmont Senior High School had other ideas.
Behind the strong arm of Connor Neal and the tough running of Breeden Gilbert, the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are state champions for the first time since 1946.
All eyes were on the offenses leading up to this rematch of the 2017 state title game.…

This season, the folks at Coalfield Sports picked five of the most intriguing matchups in the area to be the games of the week before the fans selected THE game of the week.
Each week, Ryan and Brady, the hosts of the SWVASports Podcast picked the five contests and were joined by a special guest each week.
Now that it is playoff time, there is a twist.
Ryan and Brady will still be joined by a guest picker and a trivia question winner throughout the playoffs.… 
When the Bluefield Beavers head to Wheeling this Friday for their meeting with the Fairmont Polar Bears in the WVSSAC AA state championship, the Beavers will be in familiar territory.
This season’s state championship berth marks the 17th time that Bluefield has appeared in the gold medal matchup.
Bluefield has taken home the hardware in 11 of those 17 appearances. Those 11 titles are tied with now defunct Ceredo-Kenova for third all-time for the most football state titles in West Virginia.… 
As prolific as the Bluefield Beavers’ offense has been this season it’s easy to see why at times their defense is overlooked.
This was not the case on Friday.
With the third ranked Bridgeport Indians coming to town with a trip to Wheeling Island Stadium on the line, the Beavers’ defense showed that they were not to be overlooked. Bluefield held the high-octane Indian offense to just two touchdowns in a 35-14 state semi-final win.…
