For the third straight year, Giles (5-6) fell to Appomattox (9-1) in the playoffs. The Raiders showed that despite having a young team, they still have a chance at making it to the state title game for the fourth straight year. Appomattox thumped the Spartans 35-6 at Bragg Stadium to advance in the regional playoffs. Giles finishes 2018 with their first losing season since 1987, a streak that ranks near the top of all Virginia schools.… Read the rest

The regular season is over with and the post season begins. Win, and you get to play another week. Lose, and you get to pull out the basketballs. The last two seasons Appomattox (8-1) has been responsible for Giles (5-5) pulling the basketballs out early. In 2016, Giles fell to the Raiders 45-21 in the second round. In 2017, the Spartans returned to Bragg Stadium and fell once again in the second round, 45-14.… Read the rest
The Spartans finished the regular season strong with a 42-20 victory over the Mountaineers. Giles (5-5, 3-3) jumped out to a 20-6 lead at halftime. Dominic Collini scored from 29 yards out and another score from 11 yards out. Logan Greenway added the third score in the first half from four yards out.
Early in the third quarter, Alleghany (0-9, 0-5) closed the gap, faking out the Spartan defense on an option play.… Read the rest
It was a tough night for ten Spartan seniors. Not only did they play their last game at Stephen C. Ragsdale Field, but they fell to their district rivals, Glenvar (9-0, 5-0). The Highlander offense started wearing Giles (4-5, 2-3) down in the second quarter, and they showed that their defense is as good as advertised, leaving Pearisburg with a 38-6 victory.
Much of first quarter consisted of three-and-outs for both teams, and it appeared that this game would be a defensive battle. … Read the rest
Since 2011, the Three Rivers District champion has either been Giles or Glenvar.
Giles had won 20 straight against Glenvar before falling to them in the 2014 playoffs. It was at that time the two turned into district rivals. The Highlanders went on a four game winning streak against the Spartans before Giles pulled off the upset last season in Salem, giving Glenvar their first loss.
While the Spartans have been perrenial contenders for decades, the Highlanders have made themselves known across the region more recently.… Read the rest
As the regular season winds down, the post season picture becomes clearer. Not often is Giles at risk of not making it into the playoffs. With a losing record near the end of the season, the Spartans knew how important a win over Carroll County would be.
Giles left Tommy Thompson Field on Saturday with a 33-13 victory over the Cavaliers to keep their post season hopes alive.

After giving up a 28-point lead and falling to James River last week, many wonder what the mindset is for the Spartan players and coaches. Giles dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Three Rivers District.

The Spartan faithful were in shock after witnessing Giles (3-4, 1-2) surrender a 28-0 lead against James River (5-1, 1-1). The Knights scored 36 unanswered points and completely shut the single-wing offense down in the second half, leaving Steven C. Ragsdale with a 36-28 victory to spoil homecoming in Pearisburg.
