Bears, Bearcats show flashes of potential in benefit game

Leave it to the Union Bears to make a benefit game dramatic. The Bears traveled to Bristol to take on the Virginia High Bearcats for a scrimmage, their last preseason test before opening the season against John I. Burton on Aug. 23rd. While the game does not count towards your record, it came down to a last second Union stop for the Bears to prevail, 24-20. Falcons smack Rebels in benefit game

The annual benefit game between Abingdon and Patrick Henry was held August 16.  As usual, it was the dog days of summer in Glade Spring–hot and humid with a hint of football in the air.  Rebel quarterback Brady Stiltner struck first with a 53-yard touchdown pass to give Patrick Henry a 6-0 advantage in the first quarter.  Abingdon’s offense settled in and started executing. Abingdon’s senior quarterback Gabe Boothe (10-17, 166 YDS) put together a five play,  67-yard drive to help the Falcons answer.  … Read the rest

Preseason Poll: Hogoheegee District

Today is the final day of our district poll series. We’ll be releasing the remaining three districts today, starting with the Hogoheegee. The Hogo used to run straight through Wytheville. However, with George Wythe’s move to the Mountain Empire District, it’s opened the door for new blood at the top. The Hogo sent two teams to the playoffs last year, with Chilhowie claiming the top seed in Region 1D & Patrick Henry taking the two seed.… Read the rest

Union’s Travis Turner looks forward to 2018

Union High School has had one head coach since its inception in 2011. That coach is Travis Turner, whose name has been a staple in Wise County for decades. Turner, a native of Appalachia, was a star quarterback who won a state title as a signal caller under his dad, legendary coach Tom Turner. Virginia High to host Union in benefit game

On Thursday night August 16th, the Union Bears will travel to Bristol to take on the Virginia High Bearcats for 2018’s benefit game. This will be the second consecutive year that these two teams have locked horns in the final tune-up before the start of the regular season. Last year’s contest was closer than expected. It also served as a pretty accurate forecast of things to come. 2018 J.I. Burton Raiders Season Preview Head Coach: Jim Adams Cumberland District, Region D 2017 record: 7-6 (4-1 Cumberland) For most teams, starting a season 1-4 would foreshadow a death sentence.
