Glenvar, Radford battle for district title in Salem

For the first time in Three Rivers District history, Glenvar (9-0, 5-0) and Radford (8-1, 5-0) will battle for the title. The Highlanders won their first district championship in 2015 and won it again in 2016. The last time the Bobcats played for the district title was in 2011, where they fell to Giles, 21-17. Since 1999, Radford has won the district three times in 2000, 2003 and 2009. Both teams have had great success this season.… Read the rest

Narrows, Parry McCluer battle for Pioneer Title

Narrows (8-1, 4-0) hopes to return home Friday night from Buena Vista as back-to-back Pioneer District champions. While Narrows is the current front runner in the district, a loss to Parry McCluer (5-4, 3-1) would make the Wave have to share the title with McCluer and Covington. Narrows defeated the Fighting Blues last season 40-14. Leading the Wave to an impressive 19-3 record since 2017 is senior quarterback Wyatt Freeman. Giles tops Alleghany to conclude regular season

The Spartans finished the regular season strong with a 42-20 victory over the Mountaineers. Giles (5-5, 3-3) jumped out to a 20-6 lead at halftime. Dominic Collini scored from 29 yards out and another score from 11 yards out. Logan Greenway added the third score in the first half from four yards out. Giles falls to Glenvar on senior night

It was a tough night for ten Spartan seniors. Not only did they play their last game at Stephen C. Ragsdale Field, but they fell to their district rivals, Glenvar (9-0, 5-0). The Highlander offense started wearing Giles (4-5, 2-3) down in the second quarter, and they showed that their defense is as good as advertised, leaving Pearisburg with a 38-6 victory. Giles, Glenvar set for district showdown in Pearisburg

  Since 2011, the Three Rivers District champion has either been Giles or Glenvar. Giles had won 20 straight against Glenvar before falling to them in the 2014 playoffs. It was at that time the two turned into district rivals. The Highlanders went on a four game winning streak against the Spartans before Giles pulled off the upset last season in Salem, giving Glenvar their first loss. While the Spartans have been perrenial contenders for decades, the Highlanders have made themselves known across the region more recently.… Read the rest

Pulaski falls to Blacksburg in defensive battle

After a 21-14 halftime score, fans expected the second half to be a shootout between Blacksburg (8-0, 4-0) and Pulaski (6-2, 3-1). That is not how it played out. In fact, neither team scored a touchdown in the second half and both teams combined for only 84 total yards. The Bruins were able to hold on to the halftime lead, and left Kenneth J. Green Wave drown out Mustangs

Narrows (6-1, 2-0) got their first shut out of the season, defeating the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs (2-5, 0-2) to remain unbeaten in the Pioneer District. Wyatt Freeman, who surpassed the single game passing record last week, threw for 143 yards and a touchdown through the air while adding one on the ground. In the first quarter, Freeman connected with wide receiver Chase Blaker. The Green Wave receiver shook off his defender and sprinted 75 yards for the Green Wave’s first score.… Read the rest

Giles tops Carroll to keep playoff hopes alive

As the regular season winds down, the post season picture becomes clearer. Not often is Giles at risk of not making it into the playoffs. With a losing record near the end of the season, the Spartans knew how important a win over Carroll County would be. Giles left Tommy Thompson Field on Saturday with a 33-13 victory over the Cavaliers to keep their post season hopes alive. Giles turns attention to Carroll County

After giving up a 28-point lead and falling to James River last week, many wonder what the mindset is for the Spartan players and coaches. Giles dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Three Rivers District. Freeman and Green Wave ready for Mustangs

Last Friday was a huge night for the Green Wave. Not only did they defeat a tough Covington team with seconds remaining in their Pioneer District opener, they also broke a few records along the way. Quarterback Wyatt Freeman broke the single-game passing record, completing 17-of-26 passes for 308 yards. He also threw the game-winning touchdown with four seconds remaining in the game.
