James River spoils homecoming in Giles

The Spartan faithful were in shock after witnessing Giles (3-4, 1-2) surrender a 28-0 lead against James River (5-1, 1-1). The Knights scored 36 unanswered points and completely shut the single-wing offense down in the second half, leaving Steven C. Ragsdale with a 36-28 victory to spoil homecoming in Pearisburg. Narrows travels to Covington for district opener

Narrows (4-1) starts defending their 2017 Pioneer District title this week at Covington (3-2). The two teams played twice last season. Narrows won the regular season contest 48-18 and one more defeated the Cougars 21-0 in the second round of the playoffs. Covington seeks revenge, led by one of the top running backs in the Pioneer district. In last week’s 56-14 victory over Nelson County, Covington had 454 total yards of offense.… Read the rest

Giles, James River set for Three Rivers District showdown

There is not much history between Giles and James River, as the two have played each other five times since 1980 with Giles leading the series 4-1. With the Knights now in the Three Rivers District, they know that beating Giles would be a great accomplishment, especially after falling to the Spartans 54-7 last season. Narrows, Morgan runs wild in victory over Holston

Narrows (4-1) made an impressive run last season after their only regular season loss. Many wondered if they would be able to do the same after suffering their first loss two weeks ago. Narrows running back Matthew Morgan ended whatever doubt the Green Wave faithful had, as he rushed for 195 yards with three touchdowns. Narrows celebrated their homecoming night with a 34-14 victory over a much improved Holston squad. Radford thrashes Giles at Salem Stadium

For the first time in 21 years, Radford (5-1, 2-0) shut out the Spartans in a 38-0 thrashing at Salem Stadium. They also ended a seven-year losing streak to Giles(3-3, 1-1) in this Three Rivers District contest. After facing electrical issues at its home field, Radford chose to move this game to Salem Stadium. Narrows looks to bounce back against Holston

In their 2017 season, the Green Wave won six straight games after falling to county rival Giles. The run was good enough to clinch the number one seed in region 1C. This season they plan on doing the same after falling to Giles in a hard fought battle in week four. Giles, Radford return to Salem for district showdown

The last time Giles and Radford played at Salem Stadium they were playing for a state championship. Radford lost their state game to Essex in 2009 and Giles topped Brunswick in the 2013 version of the state championship. Unexpectedly, the two teams return to Salem to battle each other this Friday. Wilson kicks Giles to a victory over Floyd

Like last week’s contest against Narrows, Giles (3-2, 1-0) had to play the full 48 minutes to edge Floyd (1-4, 0-1). Giles place-kicker Jacoby Wilson nailed a 37-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining to put the Spartans on top 24-21 in their Three Rivers District opener. The game began as an offensive showdown in the first half quickly turned into a defensive stand off in the second half. Both Giles and Floyd rushed for a combined 645 yards.… Read the rest

Giles host Floyd in Three Rivers District opener

Floyd (1-3) hopes to end their losing streak against Giles (2-2) as they travel to Pearisburg in a Three Rivers District opener. Coach Winfred Beale enters his 37th season as the Buffaloes head coach. In those 37 seasons, he only has five victories over the Spartans out of thirty meetings. The last time Floyd beat Giles was in 2008. That was a year that the Buffalos were unstoppable until they fell to Gretna in the state championship.… Read the rest

Giles comes from behind to keep streak vs. Narrows alive

Narrows (3-1) was just minutes away from ending their 15-game losing streak to their county rivals, Giles (2-2). However, Giles’ Logan Greenway defeated the Green Waves in the final minute. Greenway rushed for 147 yards and led the Spartans to a 12-7 victory over the unbeaten Green Wave. Greenway, filling in for Chaston Ratcliffe who was limited due to an injury, scored the game winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining.… Read the rest
