Richlands extends The Streak, prepares for Battle of the Storms

(photo credit: Elizabeth Bennett) If it could have gone right for Richlands against Tazewell, it did. The Blues cashed in on five Bulldog turnovers in its way to a 41-0 rivalry win. It’s the 17th straight win for Richlands in what is dubbed the Backyard Brawl for the James C. Ramey Cup. It’s also the 4th straight shutout win for Richlands in the series. Senior QB Cade Simmons continued to show improvement, throwing for 130 yards on a 6-9 evening with 2 passing scores.… Read the rest

2019 Richlands football preview

Can you smell it? The air is getting crisp — for the moment. Fall is almost here. The grass is getting clipped and lines are being painted (well, maybe not at Ernie Hicks Stadium). It’s football season. 2018 was a bounce-back year for the Blues, turning out an 8-5 record and a berth in the regional title game. That comes just a year after a 4-7 campaign. The 2019 Blue Tornado are hoping to get back a running game this season, something that could help a new starting quarterback.… Read the rest

Allen dazzles, downs Richlands for Region 2D Championship

It was the Cam Allen show, part II, on Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Stadium. Southwest District, Tazewell County rivals meet in Region 2D Final

As Alex Tabor said on Twitter Friday night, there are three things you can count on in life. Death. Taxes. And Richlands playing past Thanksgiving. While that may hold true this season, the game itself will be an uphill climb. Richlands (8-4) and Graham (11-1) met in this same venue five weeks ago; a 45-0 embarrassment as Graham won the Southwest District. Graham features speed and size, a rare combination in the lower classes of the VHSL.… Read the rest

Richlands shocks Ridgeview, advances to region title game

It was quite the afternoon on Saturday on Rose Ridge. Richlands traveled to Ridgeview for what was one of the most-anticipated matchups in southwest Virginia and came out on top with a 31-21 victory over the first seeded Wolfpack. It looked like it would be a bad start, after a muffed kickoff forced Richlands to start the game on their own 2-yard line. A resurgent Richlands (8-4) offense proved they were game, going 98 yards down the field for a 1-yard Trey Brown touchdown run, keyed by a long 53-yard pass from Race Moir to Taylor Horn.… Read the rest

Richlands upsets Grayson County, 10-0 in muddy Independence

It wasn’t exactly pretty, but it worked. Richlands used a dominant defensive performance to upset 4th seeded Grayson County 10-0 and move on in the Region 2D playoffs. A litany of miscues on offense stalled a bevy of Richlands drives, but when it mattered most, an opportunistic defense and special teams came up with six turnovers in the shutout performance. Richlands got on the board first early in the second quarter behind a drive set up by a turnover.… Read the rest

Richlands prevails in Bristol, defeats Virginia High in overtime

Exhale. That’s what a collective fanbase did after the excitement of a thrilling overtime game had faded from Gene Malcolm Stadium. Staring down the uprights, Levi “Fle” Forrest had missed his three previous attempts, including an attempt at a game winner just moments earlier. This one was true, however, and it lifted Richlands to a 17-14 victory over Southwest District foe Virginia on senior night. Richlands drove the field on their opening drive, only for Race Moir to be hit and fumble the ball in the backfield.… Read the rest

Graham blanks Richlands, 45-0

Graham and Richlands have played football since 1926. Thursday night’s 45-0 win over the Blues was the largest win ever in the series for the G-Men. The previous margin? Graham 30, Richlands 0 way back on Oct. 7, 1932. Let that sink in. Graham could do no wrong. Richlands could do no right. It all started with Cam Allen, who may have solidified his spot as the top player in Region D of Class 2.… Read the rest

Blues, G-Men set for matchup of Southwest District powers

The mood tonight inside Mitchell Stadium will be a mixed bag. On one hand, you have the marquee game of Tazewell County, as well as the Southwest District. On, the other, you have a team in Blue who will have heavy hearts following the death of one of their classmates earlier this week. The Blues will honor the life and memory of Justin Dye tonight by wearing helmets with his initials on the back of each one.… Read the rest
