Union set to welcome G-Men for regional semi’s

The two teams have grown to be pretty familiar with each other as they set to do battle in the playoffs for the fourth time in five years and for the fifth time overall. Back in mid September, Union traveled to Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield and stole one from the G-Men in the final seconds off of the right leg of Junior kicker Koby Crist. Holston runs by Eastside to earn first playoff win in ten years

After making first round exits in the playoffs in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2018, the Holston Cavaliers earned their first playoff victory since beating Bath County 30-7 in a 2013 playoff game in Damascus. Riding the arm and legs of quarterback Quaheim Brooks, Holston compiled nearly 400 yards of offense in the 29-15 victory over Eastside at Carl McConnell Stadium on Saturday afternoon. “One thing we can always say about Q is that all these kids look up to him and feed off of his energy.” Said Holston head coach Derrick Patterson.… Read the rest

Union survives first round scare from Gate City

  Coming in to Fridays Region 2D quarterfinal matchup against Gate City, Union was focused on stopping Gate City’s rushing attack of Michael Calhoun and Logan Tomlinson, who both rushed for over 100 yards against the Bears back in late September. Instead, Gate City used a spread offense look that almost propelled them to an upset victory over Union inside Bullitt Park. Union got 145 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns from Mason Polier in the fourth quarter and a successful PAT from Tadyn Roark with just over five minutes remaining that allowed Union to preserve a 20-19 victory.… Read the rest

Galax set to host Eastern Montgomery in first round of Region 1C playoffs

The Galax Maroon Tide have been on fire since dropping a 42-28 decision to the Northside Vikings back in late September. Since the loss, they have averaged 53 points per contest while yielding the opposition to 28 points and also pitching two shutouts against Fort Chiswell and Grayson County. The Mustangs from Eastern Montgomery have limped in to the playoffs as they started their year 0-5 before earning their first win of the season against Bath County in mid October.… Read the rest

Union, Gate City set to add new chapter to rivalry

Back in late September Union jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and held on in the second half for a 28-14 win over Gate City and sent the Blue Devils to their fourth straight loss after opening up the season with a 34-29 victory over Richlands. Gate City played the game without playmakers Carson Jenkins and D’Andre Mack while Union had a healthy Zavier Lomax. Fast forward to November and Gate City has gained Jenkins and Mack while Union is without Lomax who was injured the following week against Paintsville.… Read the rest

Eastside, Holston set to collide at Carl McConnell Stadium

Two weeks ago Derrick Pattersons Holston Cavaliers invaded Carl McConnell stadium and shut out the Eastside Spartans in the second half en route to a 40-22 victory. Now this coming Friday, the Spartans are eager to return the favor to the Cavs in the opening round of the Region 1D playoffs. Cumberland foes Burton, Castlewood ready for playoff duel

Coming off of a 28-7 victory over Castlewood on October 25th, J.I. Burton is not taking the Blue Devils lightly. Castlewood held a 7-6 lead at halftime of that contest before Mikey Culberton led the charge in the second half as the Raiders scored 22 unanswered points after halftime to grab the crucial Cumberland victory. Chilhowie, Thomas Walker set to lock horns in first ever meeting

Chilhowie (8-2) is the #3 seed in the Region 1D playoffs while the Thomas Walker Pioneers (6-4) are the #6 seed. This will be the first ever meeting between the two school who are located 113 miles apart, just a little over two hours of a trip. Big second half propels Burton past Pioneers in Cumberland clinching victory

Nick Johnsons Pioneers gave Burton all they could handle in the first half of last Fridays Cumberland matchup in Ewing. 28 unanswered, second half points allowed the Raiders to clinch their fourth Cumberland District championship and second in as many years as they raced past Thomas Walker 44-6. Burton held Thomas Walker to 137 total yards of offense and Burton racked up 424 yards of total offense, 306 of those on the ground.… Read the rest

Union caps off regular season with dominant win over John Battle

  In the movie The Program, Joe Kane said it best “Let’s put the women and children to bed and go looking for dinner.” Well, it didn’t take long for the Bears to get everybody tucked in and get themselves fed.
