Bears maul Generals in Brawl for the Bucket

Union used a ferocious defensive attack and a steady running game en route to a 28-0 season opening victory over the Lee High Generals on Monday night at Bullitt Park. Ridgeview, Wise Central Hoping to Unseat Union in Mountain 7

Union Bears  Last seasons record (9-3) The defending Mountain 7 champions are faced with the daunting task of replacing All State running back and linebacker Mason Polier who accounted for 130 tackles last season while rushing for nearly 1,900 yards and 30 touchdowns. Cumberland Teams Look to Dethrone Burton

John. I Burton Raiders  Last seasons record – (10-3)  The J.I. Burton Raiders return 15 starters from last years Region 1D runner-up team. That team was led on both sides of the ball by Cumberland District Player of the Year Mikey Culbertson. Culbertson was also the Region 1D Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the VHSL All State first team. Family Affair: Polier and Satterfield garner All State wrestling honors

Cousins Mason Polier and Johnny Satterfield wrapped up a stellar season on the wrestling mat for Union High School. Each brought home a third place finish in the VHSL class 2A state wrestling tournament this past February, Polier in the 220 pound class and Satterfield in the 160 pound class. Union’s Mason Polier signs on dotted line to continue football career at UVA Wise

Fans who spent their Friday nights at Bullitt Park will now be able to make the 17 mile trek from Big Stone Gap to Carl Smith Stadium in Wise to watch Mason Polier on Saturday afternoons for the UVA Wise Cavaliers. The 6’2 220 pound Polier, who starred on both sides of the ball for Union as a running back and linebacker, signed with Wise on February 5th at Union High School.… Read the rest

Twin Springs’ Reed inks with UVA Wise to continue his baseball career

Twin Springs High School baseball standout Justin Reed has signed on the dotted line to continue both his academic and baseball careers at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Reed will begin his journey in the Fall of 2020 and dig his cleats in to the new dirt at Burchell Stallard Field for long time Wise skipper Hank Banner. Banner, a resident of Castlewood, is entering his 24th season at the helm of the club and is excited to welcome in Reed, who lives about 20 minutes down the road from his future coach.… Read the rest

Patrick Henry blanks Burton to claim Region 1D title, sets up date with Galax in state semifinals

The Patrick Henry Rebels laid claim to the programs first ever regional football title this past Saturday with a 24-0 victory over the J.I. Burton Raiders at Emory & Henry’s Fred Selfe Stadium. The three headed attack of Dakota Rector, Cody Smith and Zach Brown led the way on offense for the Rebels as they accumulated all of their points in the first half. Graham bottles up Union in regional semifinals

  The 37-35 win over Graham back in September at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield against Graham was one that will be talked about forever in the towns of Big Stone Gap and Appalachia. Last Fridays 48-7 loss to the G-Men was one that folks will want to forget. Galax, Auburn set to lock horns in Region 1C semi’s

Galax and Auburn are set to square off for the second time this season and the 27th time overall. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools in the playoffs. Galax has won 5 out of the last 7 meetings between the two and have won three in a row, including a 55-14 win over the Eagles back on October 25th. J.I. Burton set to host Chilhowie in region 1D semi’s

The Raiders are set to welcome the Warriors in what will be the second playoff meeting between to the two squads. Chilhowie knocked off Burton back in the 2017 playoffs in Chilhowie by a score of 42-7 in the Region 1D championship game to advance to the state semi finals. Chilhowie is currently 7-0 in Region D play. These two teams have gotten to know each other fairly well as it will be the ninth meeting in the last seven years.… Read the rest
