Big second half propels Burton past Pioneers in Cumberland clinching victory

Nick Johnsons Pioneers gave Burton all they could handle in the first half of last Fridays Cumberland matchup in Ewing. 28 unanswered, second half points allowed the Raiders to clinch their fourth Cumberland District championship and second in as many years as they raced past Thomas Walker 44-6. Burton held Thomas Walker to 137 total yards of offense and Burton racked up 424 yards of total offense, 306 of those on the ground.

With only a 16-6 lead at halftime, Najee Steele and Mikey Culbertson added touchdown runs to make the score 32-6 heading into the final period. Steele added his second touchdown run in the fourth quarter and Esau Teasley scored his third touchdown of the night on a 23 yard run to make the final margin 44-6.

Burton (8-2) won their 8th game in a row and heads in to next weeks Region 1D playoffs as the #2 seed and set to host Cumberland foe Castlewood (6-4) in the opening round Friday night at 7 p.m. The Raiders defeated the Blue Devils 28-7 back on October 25th at Lawson Fitchko Stadium in Norton.

Thomas Walker (6-4) lost their third game in a row and will enter the Region 1D playoffs as the #6 seed and will travel to take on the #3 seed Chilhowie Warriors (8-2) Friday night at 7 p.m.

Mikey Culbertson led the charge for Burton Friday night as he recorded his 500th career tackle and added 135 yards rushing along with a touchdown run in the third quarter. Esau Teasley rushed for 87 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns and also added 3 receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Najee Steele tacked on 2 touchdown runs for Burton on 80 yards rushing. Quarterback Jaymen Buchanan tossed for 118 yards through the air.
