Honaker, Hurley battle for the Black Diamond District lead

The favorite to win the Black Diamond District will most likely be the winner of this game.  A win tonight actually would give Honaker its 12th Black Diamond District title in school history and its first since 2015. Thomas Walker travels to Twin Valley, looking to add to playoff resume

The season in Ewing for the Thomas Walker Pioneers has started on a high note. The Pioneers are 5-1 for the first time since 1996. Third year head coach Nick Johnson has the squad from Virginia’s most western high school clicking as they travel back to his Buchanan County roots on Friday. Black Raiders, Golden Wave to battle in Grundy

J.I. Burton (4-2) at Grundy (4-2)  Two very familiar foes are set to do battle on Friday night at Nelson Memorial Stadium in Grundy.  The Raiders and the Golden Wave have met up three times in the past two seasons. Grundy took care of business in the first meeting of 2017 in a 34-7 victory. Twin Valley, River View meet in an interstate clash

A lot of purple will flood the scene at Oakwood Friday night when Twin Valley plays host to intrastate rival River View.   The Panthers come off the bye week with high hopes after a 54-42 win over Craig County on September 27th. Wade Cantrell led the Panthers on the long road trip with two touchdown passes as Twin Valley avenged last year’s lost to the Rockets. Northwood travels to Buchanan County to take on the Rebels

Last week proved to be two totally different tales for these two quads.   Northwood fell to Castlewood by a score of 38-6 in Saltville on Friday night. The Panthers defense allowed 375 rushing yards on the ground while amassing 162 yards of offense. The Panthers have struggled in Tim Johnson’s inaugural campaign. Northwood has only scored 44 points in 2019. Johnson and the Panthers found the win column when they hosted the Twin Valley Panthers back on September 20.… Read the rest

JI Burton, Honaker to meet for the 14th time

Over the past two decades, the Class 1 ranks of Virginia have became familiar with the Honaker Tigers and J.I. Burton Raiders.   Both teams have been a top of the Class 1 ranks when it comes to the programs in far southwest Virginia. Friday night will feature southwest Virginia’s dean of coaches on one sideline and a rookie coach on the other. Richlands upsets top-ranked Radford, sets sights to Tazewell

There was electricity in the air at Ernie Hicks Stadium on Friday night, as Richlands upended previously unbeaten Radford 45-28. Behind the arms — and legs — of senior quarterback Cade Simmons, Richlands (2-3) was able to run past the top ranked Radford Bobcats (4-1) out of region 2C. Simmons generated five touchdowns on the night, two by air and three by running. Aided by an early Radford fumble, the Blues struck first on a 2-yard touchdown plunge by Simmons to take the early 7-0 lead.… Read the rest
