Big second half propels Burton past Pioneers in Cumberland clinching victory

Nick Johnsons Pioneers gave Burton all they could handle in the first half of last Fridays Cumberland matchup in Ewing. 28 unanswered, second half points allowed the Raiders to clinch their fourth Cumberland District championship and second in as many years as they raced past Thomas Walker 44-6. J.I. Burton cruised to an easy 39-6 victory last week over the Rye Cove Eagles and were able to get some of their starters rested in the second half. The Thomas Walker Pioneers were on the wrong side of a lopsided game last week as they were defeated by Twin Springs, 35-13. Raiders rough up Eagles

J.I. Burton wasted no time in putting away Rye Cove Friday night. A 27 point outburst in the first quarter led to a 39-0 lead at halftime for the Raiders who eventually came away with the 39-6 victory on the road over the Eagles. Burton piled up 336 yards of offense in the victory. 333 of those yards came via rush as Esau Teasley led the way for the Raiders as he scored on runs of 46 and 55 yards in the opening ten minutes of the game to finish his night with 101 yards on the ground.… Read the rest

Burton set to raid Clinchport to take on Rye Cove

  Both Rye Cove (4-4, 0-3) and J.I. Burton (6-2, 3-0) come in to this Fridays contest at the Eagles Nest riding winning streaks. Rye Cove has won two in a row while averaging 40 points per over the two wins. Burton takes control of Cumberland with victory over Castlewood

J.I. Burton extended their winning streak to six games while taking over sole possession of first place in the Cumberland after their 28-7 victory over Castlewood Friday night. The loss snapped a four game winning streak for Castlewood and handed the Blue Devils their second Cumberland loss of the season. The Raiders got all they wanted from Castlewood in the first half while only leading 6-0 in the second quarter. Burton welcomes in Castlewood for Cumberland clash

  J.I. Burton has a new head coach but the results haven’t changed. Jacob Caudill has served on the Raiders coaching staff for the last seven years and was the defensive coordinator before taking over the head coaching position this summer. Caudill has his Raiders in position to claim another Cumberland crown if they can hold serve over the final three weeks of the season. Black Raiders, Golden Wave to battle in Grundy

J.I. Burton (4-2) at Grundy (4-2)  Two very familiar foes are set to do battle on Friday night at Nelson Memorial Stadium in Grundy.  The Raiders and the Golden Wave have met up three times in the past two seasons. Grundy took care of business in the first meeting of 2017 in a 34-7 victory. Wolfpack open season with win over Raiders, Adkins scores 5 TD’s

Lawson-Fitchko Stadium in downtown Norton was the site of Southwest Virginia’s opening football contest of 2019.  The venerable stadium was also the host of one of Southwest Virginia’s finest single performances in recent memory.  Trenton Adkins of the Ridgeview Wolfpack rushed for 357 yards and 5 TD’s on the night in a 40-13 convincing victory over the John I.
