What was once the marquee Mountain 7 game of the season has became a ho-hum affair in recent memory. The Union Bears (4-1, 1-1) extended their winning streak over Gate City (0-5, 0-2) to four with a 33-13 victory at Legion Field in Gate City.
The Bears found the end zone on their first five possessions. Four of those scores came in the first half to take a 26-0 lead into the break.… 
This week’s game of the week features the two top teams in the Mountain 7. The winner should hold the inside track to a district title and home field advantage come playoff time.
Here are some of the crucial matchups that could determine the game:
Ridgeview Offensive Line v. Union Front Seven
This match up could be the deciding factor Friday. If the Wolfpack offensive line can get push at the line of scrimmage and negate the powerful Union front seven, it will put the Bears on their heels.… 
Union 34 Letcher County Central 7
After a slow first quarter that saw the Bears manage seven points, Union came alive in the second quarter in route to a 34-6 win.
The non-conference win pushes the Bears to 3-0 going into next week’s highly anticipated district contest against the Ridgeview Wolfpack. Both teams enter the game undefeated and the winner will have the inside track to a Mountain 7 title as well as the top seed in Region D.… 
It was a pretty eventful week for Union inside linebacker and running back Mason Polier.
Defeating one of your biggest rivals on the road in a critical Region D contest? Check.
Rushing for over 100 yards, including a 70 yard touchdown romp? Check.
Racking up 11.5 tackles in a defensive effort that held the high flying Richlands offense to 28 points? Check.

A score can be deceiving.
The scoreboard at Ernie Hicks Stadium read 42-28 when the dust settled. However, the game was far from a blowout.
The Tornado drove down the field looking to tie the game. However, Bryce Guerrant snagged an errant pass from Richlands quarterback Race Moir and returned it 18 yards for the game sealing touchdown.
While this game broke the tradition of the game being decided by six points or less, there was no shortage of excitement.… 
It didn’t take long for Union Bear senior running back Avery Jenkins to make his mark this season. In the opener, the speedster carried the ball 11 times for 227 yards (20 YPC) in route to Union’s 35-20 win over J.I. Burton and also being named the inaugural CoalfieldSports.com Offensive Player of the Week.
Jenkins was electric in all phases of the game. Before breaking off an 80-yard touchdown run, Jenkins had two long kick returns negated that would have put him over 300 all-purpose yards.… 
No close-proximity tension. No county connection. The two teams aren’t even in the same conference. However, Richlands and Union has become one of, if not the biggest rivalry in southwest Virginia. .
Since Union High School opened, the teams have met eight times. Seven times in the regular season with a lone playoff encounter in 2017. In those eight meetings, the largest margin of victory is a nine-point Union victory in last season’s regular season matchup.…
