What was once the marquee Mountain 7 game of the season has became a ho-hum affair in recent memory. The Union Bears (4-1, 1-1) extended their winning streak over Gate City (0-5, 0-2) to four with a 33-13 victory at Legion Field in Gate City. Bears hold on to defeat Blues, 42-28

A score can be deceiving. The scoreboard at Ernie Hicks Stadium read 42-28 when the dust settled. However, the game was far from a blowout. The Tornado drove down the field looking to tie the game. However, Bryce Guerrant snagged an errant pass from Richlands quarterback Race Moir and returned it 18 yards for the game sealing touchdown. CoalfieldSports.com’s Inaugural OPOTW: Union’s Avery Jenkins

It didn’t take long for Union Bear senior running back Avery Jenkins to make his mark this season. In the opener, the speedster carried the ball 11 times for 227 yards (20 YPC) in route to Union’s 35-20 win over J.I. Burton and also being named the inaugural CoalfieldSports.com Offensive Player of the Week. Jenkins was electric in all phases of the game. Richlands, Union has became SWVA’s Annual Game to Watch

  No close-proximity tension. No county connection. The two teams aren’t even in the same conference. However, Richlands and Union has become one of, if not the biggest rivalry in southwest Virginia. . Since Union High School opened, the teams have met eight times. Seven times in the regular season with a lone playoff encounter in 2017.
