Warriors continue incredible season, shock Wolfpack

Perhaps no one outside of the picturesque towns of Pound and Wise could have predicted the outcome of Friday night’s contest between the Ridgeview Wolfpack and the Wise Central Warriors.  In week three of the regular season, the Wolfpack had dispatched the Warriors with ease 41-20.  Trenton Adkins ran through the Central defense and made it look simple on his way to a six touchdown performance on that September evening.  The folks who made the trip from Wise County believed, and more importantly, coach Luke Owens and his young Warriors team believed and the Warriors shocked the Wolfpack 14-7 on a dense, foggy evening on the Ridge Friday night.… Read the rest

Wolfpack, Warriors set for playoff rematch

Wolfpack Dispatch Hurricanes 49-7

photo* SWVA Photography The goal at the start of the season for many of the Ridgeview Wolfpack football players was to win a state championship.  The Wolfpack are one win closer after Friday night’s opening round playoff victory over the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes.  The Wolfpack dominated and were never challenged in the 49-7 triumph.  All 56 of the game’s total points were accumulated in the first 24 minutes of action. Spartans Clinch Home Playoff Opener, Down Blue Devils 42-32

Much was riding on Saturday’s Cumberland District clash with Eastside and Castlewood:  a second place district finish and a home playoff opener.  It was the Spartans of Eastside that came out on top in the back and forth battle by a final of 42-32. Ridgeview defeats Honaker, clinches top seed in Region 2D

The Ridgeview Wolfpack football team had one thing on their minds on Friday night.  Defeat Honaker and clinch the top seed in the Class 2, Region D playoffs.  The outcome was never in doubt. The Wolfpack scored early and often over the course of the game’s first half and demolished the Honaker Tigers 61-14.  Ridgeview scored on its first three offensive plays and their first nine possessions overall. Wolfpack claim share of Mountain 7 title with shutout of Falcons

Coming into Friday night’s Mountain 7 District showdown with the Abingdon Falcons, most Ridgeview fans, players and staff were expecting a tough battle.  It was anything but.  The Wolfpack offense eclipsed the 40 point plateau once again and the defense scored its first shutout of the season as the Wolfpack controlled from start to finish in a resounding 41-0 victory.  The victory over the Falcons assures the Wolfpack of no worse than a share of the Mountain 7 District title. … Read the rest

Growing up in southwest Virginia, there are some things people wait for annually. Bristol race weekend in April and August, when the carnival and the fair come to town, holidays and then, perhaps, what some may argue is the most important. The beginning of two-a-days in high school football. I was born and raised in Richlands, where football has never been any less than the king.
