Giles bounces Alleghany, prepares for Glenvar

Giles (2-6, 2-2) picked up their second win of the season on the road with a shut-out 54-0 win over Alleghany (1-7, 0-4). Leading the single-wing attack for Giles, was senior wingback Logan Greenway. Greenway carried the ball just eight times but racked up 137 yard and two touchdowns. The Spartans jumped out to a 21-0 lead over the Mountaineers in the first quarter. G-Men, Spartans set for Battle at Mitchell Stadium

In week three of VHSL football, the Graham G-men (1-1) will host the Giles Spartans (0-2) at Mitchell Stadium. While Graham’s biggest non-district rivalry will always be Bluefield, and Giles’ will be Narrows, the G-Men and Spartans have turned into a good match-up in recent years. Before 2013, the two schools only played each other four times, splitting the series. Since 2013, they have scheduled each other every season and the last three games finished with an exciting ending, all in Graham’s favor.… Read the rest

Christiansburg Ends Losing Streak to Giles

After being shutout to Blacksburg in their season opener, the Giles Spartans (0-2) fell to their second Montgomery County opponent of the season, the Christiansburg Blue Demons. The Blue Demons not only ended the six-year losing streak to the Spartans but they also will start out the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2012. Christiansburg also matched their win total for the entire 2018 season. Running back Maston Stanley torched the Spartan defense with 209 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead the Blue Demons to a 28-13 victory.… Read the rest

Spartans Look to Bounce Back Against Blue Demons

After falling to 4A Blacksburg 24-0 in their season opener at home, Giles (0-1) hopes to get in the win column in week two. The Spartans will travel across the Montgomery County line to Evans King Field to take on the Christiansburg Blue Demons on their new turf field. Christiansburg (1-0) was victorious in their season opener as they took down Floyd 35-16 on the road. Along with hoping to end the seven year losing streak against Giles, the Blue Demons also hope to end the streak of four consecutive losing seasons.… Read the rest

Giles looks to improve in 2019; hosts Blacksburg in season opener

The 2018 season for the Spartans is one that many would like to forget. The single-wingers were faced with many adversities early in the season, including losing multiple starters to serious injuries. With a very tough schedule consisting of 4A powerhouse Blacksburg, the defending 2A champions Graham, and Three Rivers District forces Radford and Glenvar, the Spartans found themselves wondering if they would even make the 2A playoffs. While Giles was not expected to win those 4 games, the shocker of the season was a 34-28 defeat to James River, after the Spartans lead 28-0 at the half.… Read the rest

Appomattox bounces Giles for third straight year

For the third straight year, Giles (5-6) fell to Appomattox (9-1) in the playoffs. The Raiders showed that despite having a young team, they still have a chance at making it to the state title game for the fourth straight year. Appomattox thumped the Spartans 35-6 at Bragg Stadium to advance in the regional playoffs. Giles finishes 2018 with their first losing season since 1987, a streak that ranks near the top of all Virginia schools.… Read the rest

Appomattox looks to continue streak against Giles

The regular season is over with and the post season begins. Win, and you get to play another week. Lose, and you get to pull out the basketballs. The last two seasons Appomattox (8-1) has been responsible for Giles (5-5) pulling the basketballs out early. In 2016, Giles fell to the Raiders 45-21 in the second round. Giles tops Alleghany to conclude regular season

The Spartans finished the regular season strong with a 42-20 victory over the Mountaineers. Giles (5-5, 3-3) jumped out to a 20-6 lead at halftime. Dominic Collini scored from 29 yards out and another score from 11 yards out. Logan Greenway added the third score in the first half from four yards out. Early in the third quarter, Alleghany (0-9, 0-5) closed the gap, faking out the Spartan defense on an option play.… Read the rest
