Spartans Clinch Home Playoff Opener, Down Blue Devils 42-32

Much was riding on Saturday’s Cumberland District clash with Eastside and Castlewood:  a second place district finish and a home playoff opener.  It was the Spartans of Eastside that came out on top in the back and forth battle by a final of 42-32. The win gives the Spartans a home playoff game in the opening round of the Class 1, Region D playoffs.  Eastside will host the Holston Cavaliers on Saturday, November 16 at 1:30 pm. … Read the rest

Castlewood, Eastside set to collide in Coeburn

  Castlewood and Eastside have met eight times since the 2011 consolidations. The two rival schools have beaten each other four times in the eight game span. Castlewood won the inaugural matchup in 2011, 24-12 and then reeled off three in a row over the Spartans from 2014-2016. Eastside squeaked out a 29-28 victory over the Blue Devils in 2017, a win that clinched the outright regular season Cumberland district title.… Read the rest

Big second quarter propels Eastside past Thomas Walker

  Coming in to Friday nights contest, much of the talk was about the matchup between the hard hitting linebacker Evan Bellamy from Eastside and the bruising running back from Thomas Walker, Kenny Ball. Both players put up great numbers as Ball rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown while Bellamy collected 11 tackles. However, Grayson Whited stole the show. Whited ran for 197 yards and 3 touchdowns to push his Spartans to their biggest win of the season, a 37-12 triumph over the visiting Pioneers.… Read the rest

Spartans set to welcome in Pioneers in key Cumberland showdown

  With three weeks to go in the regular season the Cumberland race is just heating up. Thomas Walker (6-1, 2-0) currently sits in first place with Burton (5-2, 2-0), Castlewood (5-2, 2-1) and Eastside (3-4, 2-1) all breathing down their throats. Spartans blank Titans

Eastside played possibly their best defensive game of the year last Friday night as they went on the road and shutout the Twin Springs Titans, 20-0. Three players totaled double digit tackles and the Spartans held the Titans to only 97 yards of offense. The Spartans done all of their damage in the first half as they led 20-0 at halftime. Bryson Sheppard scored a pair of short yardage touchdowns in the second quarter to put the game away for Eastside.… Read the rest

Chilhowie steamrolls Eastside to advance to region semis

Region D, 1A Quarterfinals   Chilhowie Warriors (11-0, 5-0): 49 Eastside Spartans (4-7, 4-1): 0   CHILHOWIE, Va.,-The Chilhowie train keeps rolling. The Warriors scored early and often in route to a dominating 49-0 win over the visiting Eastside Spartans in the first round of the Region 1D playoffs. Led by dynamic quarterback Zack Cale, Chilhowie scored 14 points in the opening stanza followed by 21 points in the second to build a commanding 35-0 lead at the half, a deficit that proved insurmountable.… Read the rest

Chilhowie opens hopeful return trip to Salem with Eastside

Region D, 1A Eastside Spartans (4-6, 4-1 Cumberland, 8th seed) at Chilhowie Warriors (10-0, 3-0 Hogoheegee, 1st seed) Chilhowie starts its quest for their first state title since 1970 this week in their playoff opener when they host the Eastside Spartans in a rematch from week seven. The Warriors rolled the Spartans in Coeburn, 46-7 in the regular season.
