Spartans, Green Wave prepare for Giles County Throwdown

Pearisburg will look like a ghost town Friday. Why you may ask? All of the Spartan fans will be at Harry Ragsdale Field in Narrows. Giles (1-2) will travel five miles down 460 to face their arch rival, Narrows (3-0). While the series is lopsided, this is always an exciting game with a huge turnout. 2002 was the last time the Green Wave was victorious against the Spartans. Narrows won the contest 28-21, but since then Giles has won fifteen straight.… Read the rest

G-Men leave Pearisburg with 28-13 victory

In 2016 and 2017, the Giles and Graham match up came down to the last quarter. 2018 would be the same. It was not until late in the fourth before the G-Men (2-1) went up by two scores to put the game away. Fans packed in Steven C. Ragsdale Field with their umbrellas and ponchos as a storm appeared to be brewing. However, the rain held off long enough for a great night of football.… Read the rest

Spartans set to welcome G-Men to Pearisburg

The Spartans (1-1) will host the G-Men (1-1) in a non-district match up at Ragsdale Field. Both Giles and Graham lost their season openers to state contender programs. However, both bounced back in week two and found the win column. Prior to 2013, the two teams played four times, with the series tied 2-2. Since 2013, the two have played five straight with the Spartans leading the series 3-2. The G-Men have won the last two contests, in which both games came down to the final play.… Read the rest

Spartans win sixth straight over Blue Demons

Giles (1-1) rushed for nearly 250 yards in their home-opening 33-14 win over Christiansburg (1-1). The first quarter was scoreless as neither team could move the ball on offense. Giles battled similar issues as they did against Blacksburg with turnovers and penalties. Early in the second quarter, the Spartans were finally able to get the single-wing offense moving. After driving the ball to the 7-yard line, Chase Fleeman put it in the end zone on a reverse after breaking several tackles, putting Giles up 7-0.… Read the rest

Giles looks to find win column against Christiansburg

Giles welcomes their Montgomery County foe, the Christiansburg Blue Demons, to Pearisburg for its home opener Friday. Giles (0-1) must forget about the 50-7 thrashing it took from Blacksburg last week and focus on Christiansburg (1-0). With new faces scattered across the Spartan offense, Giles must find a way to get the single-wing offense moving. The Spartans rushed for only 180 yards against the Bruins, a low number for a team whose offensive production solely comes from the ground.… Read the rest

Bruins thrash Spartans in season opener

Bill Brown Stadium filled up fast on Friday night for the season opener between Blacksburg and Giles. Blacksburg showed that experience matters as they went home with a 50-7 victory over a young Giles team. Blacksburg won the toss but elected to defer to the second half. On the first kickoff there was some confusion with Giles’ return team as the ball landed on the ground and rolled around for a few seconds.… Read the rest

Giles begins their 2018 season against an experienced Blacksburg team

The Giles Spartans will travel across the county line to Bill Brown Stadium to face the Blacksburg Bruins to continue a series that started back in 1961. Despite last season’s 51-14 loss against the 2016 VHSL 3A State Champions, the Spartans know that this is a new season. Giles starts the 2018 season with new faces in the backfield and must prepare for an experienced Blacksburg team. In last year’s contest, Ryan Beidleman rushed for more than 200 yards against the strong Bruins’ defense.… Read the rest
