2019 Richlands football preview

Can you smell it? The air is getting crisp — for the moment. Fall is almost here. The grass is getting clipped and lines are being painted (well, maybe not at Ernie Hicks Stadium). It’s football season. 2018 was a bounce-back year for the Blues, turning out an 8-5 record and a berth in the regional title game. That comes just a year after a 4-7 campaign. The 2019 Blue Tornado are hoping to get back a running game this season, something that could help a new starting quarterback.… Read the rest

Southwest District, Tazewell County rivals meet in Region 2D Final

As Alex Tabor said on Twitter Friday night, there are three things you can count on in life. Death. Taxes. And Richlands playing past Thanksgiving. While that may hold true this season, the game itself will be an uphill climb. Richlands (8-4) and Graham (11-1) met in this same venue five weeks ago; a 45-0 embarrassment as Graham won the Southwest District. Graham features speed and size, a rare combination in the lower classes of the VHSL.… Read the rest

Richlands shocks Ridgeview, advances to region title game

It was quite the afternoon on Saturday on Rose Ridge. Richlands traveled to Ridgeview for what was one of the most-anticipated matchups in southwest Virginia and came out on top with a 31-21 victory over the first seeded Wolfpack. It looked like it would be a bad start, after a muffed kickoff forced Richlands to start the game on their own 2-yard line. A resurgent Richlands (8-4) offense proved they were game, going 98 yards down the field for a 1-yard Trey Brown touchdown run, keyed by a long 53-yard pass from Race Moir to Taylor Horn.… Read the rest

Richlands upsets Grayson County, 10-0 in muddy Independence

It wasn’t exactly pretty, but it worked. Richlands used a dominant defensive performance to upset 4th seeded Grayson County 10-0 and move on in the Region 2D playoffs. A litany of miscues on offense stalled a bevy of Richlands drives, but when it mattered most, an opportunistic defense and special teams came up with six turnovers in the shutout performance. Richlands got on the board first early in the second quarter behind a drive set up by a turnover.… Read the rest

Richlands prevails in Bristol, defeats Virginia High in overtime

Exhale. That’s what a collective fanbase did after the excitement of a thrilling overtime game had faded from Gene Malcolm Stadium. This one was true, however, and it lifted Richlands to a 17-14 victory over Southwest District foe Virginia on senior night. Richlands drove the field on their opening drive, only for Race Moir to be hit and fumble the ball in the backfield.… Read the rest
