Union claws their way by Gate City

After playing the Union Bears close in two games last season, Gate City done it’s best to hang around and pull the upset against the Bears on Saturday. Union’s stout defense and the 1, 2 punch of Zavier Lomax and Peyton Honeycutt proved to be the difference as Union outlasted the Devils 26-6 inside the gates of Legion Field.   Gate City was the first to make a play on the afternoon as Carson Jenkins picked off Union quarterback Bradley Bunch on the first play of the game.… Read the rest

Stansberry leads Spartans past Titans

After slipping and sliding their way by Hurley last week in the mud, the Eastside Spartans moved their Cumberland clash with the Twin Springs Titans to the turf surface at Wise Central High School. The turf proved beneficial to both offenses as the Spartans outlasted the Titans 43-30 in a game that saw the two squads combine for 52 points in the second half.   Will Stansberry has been a staple for Mike Rhodes and the Spartan football team over the years, but on Saturday the senior signal caller was nearly Superman as he accounted for four touchdowns and nearly three hundred yards of total offense.… Read the rest

Eastside powers through rain, mud to outduel Rebels

On a muddy and rain soaked field at Carl McConnell Stadium, the big boys in the trenches dominated on both sides of the ball for the Eastside Spartans as they slid past the Hurley Rebels 15-0 in their season opener. Coming off of a 360 plus yard rushing performance last week at Rye Cove, Hurley’s feet seemed to be stuck in the mud, literally, in Saturday’s matchup. Defensive linemen, Braedon Hensley and Trevor Sanders, combined for thirty tackles in limiting the Rebels to 55 yards of total offense.… Read the rest

John Battle shocks Gate City at Legion Field

Coming off of a 2-8 season, not many folks were looking at the John Battle Trojans to go in to Legion Field and beat a Gate City team that earned a playoff berth last season. The folks from Exit 7 would have told you otherwise. John Battle’s Jack Thurston ran the veer to near perfection on Monday night in the 16-6 victory over the home standing Blue Devils.   As tough and hard nosed as the Trojans offense was, the defense may have been just as good.… Read the rest

Chilhowie edges Burton

The morning rain made for a muddy game Monday night in Chilhowie between the Warriors and the J.I. Burton Raiders. The weather no doubt played a major factor in the game and played right into the hands of the Chilhowie Warriors. Led by a stout defensive effort from three seniors, Chilhowie held the electric Burton offense to only 145 yards of total offense and forced two Raider turnovers. Lineman Coby Crutchfield, along with linebackers Gabino Silverio and Jordan Williams led a stingy attack that held Burton speedster Esau Teasley in check.… Read the rest

Warriors derail Wolfpack atop Rose Ridge

It wasn’t foggy this go around but it sure was a cold one in the mountains of Dickenson County as Mountain 7 rivals Wise Central and Ridgeview opened their respective seasons. Ridgeview was left with a sour taste in their mouth as the Warriors sent the Wolfpack home in last seasons Region 2D semifinals with a 14-7 victory. Unfortunately, for Coach Todd Tiller and his Pack, it would be the same outcome as that foggy night in late November, a 14-7 loss.… Read the rest
