Graham at Bluefield:
There’s not much that can be said about this iconic rivalry game that hasn’t already been said over the years.
Graham, the reigning VA state champions in AA, looks to avenge their only loss from the 2018 season. The G-Men will look to Old Dominion University commit Devin Lester to replace the production of current Purdue Boilermaker, Cameron Allen.
Bluefield, the runner up to the West Virginia state champion in AA, will look to make it three in a row vs. their cross-town rivals. The Beavers have five division 1 scholarship offer recipients, including Sean Martin, the top ranked player in the state of WV.
Marion at Chilhowie:
The Marion Scarlet Hurricanes will visit the Chilhowie Warriors for the 82nd edition of this Smyth County rivalry.
The Warriors are replacing the nucleus of their back-to-back state runner up squads. Chilhowie will look to Jordan Williams and Lucas Doss to pick up where all state players Zack Cale and Greg Sanchez left off.
The Scarlet Hurricanes are hoping to bounce back after a 33-6 loss last year to the senior led Warriors. Marion will lean on Easton Medley and Will Moss to spearhead their efforts.
Honaker at Lebanon:
Hoanker was able to get the better of Lebanon last season in a 35-28 “Coal Bowl” win. Longtime head coach Doug Hubbard will look to his son, Chandler, to lead the Tigers into 2019.
Lebanon, led by head coach Michael Webb, will start the season auditioning for a replacement for the graduated all district halfback Seth Stanley. The Pioneers will look to regain the “Coal Bowl” and ride that momentum to their first playoff appearance since 2016.
Riverview at Mount View:
The Riverview Raiders will travel to Vic Nystrom Stadium in Welch, WV, to take on the Mount View Golden Knights.
Riverview opened the season in a rare Monday night game vs. Montcalm. The Raiders will be 1-0 when they visit Welch for the battle of McDowell County. Riverview will be led by quarterback Boo Roberts and halfback Jacob Justice.
Mount View is coming off an eleven win season. New head coach Maurice Gravely knows that replacing players such as Elijah Barner and Ty Powell will be tough, but Eliki Barner and Liam Fultineer are ready to step up.
John Battle at Abingdon:
In an all Washington County kickoff, John Battle will travel to less than ten miles to take on Abindgon.
John Battle returns most of their stingy defense from the 2018 season, including Bryson Denton. On offense Dylan Cunningham and Seth Scarborough will lead the charge.
Abingdon will look for a repeat of their 34-8 win over John Battle in 2018. The Falcons will have to replace starters such as William Seymour and T.J. Taylor, but luckily they will have talented halfback Martin Lucas taking the field this Friday.
