For the next three weeks, we will bring you our preseason polls for each of the districts that our teams play in.
Let’s do some math, shall we?
Okay. There are nine districts and there are three weeks left until opening night…sooooooo…THREE DISTRICTS PER WEEK!
Shew, glad that’s over.
Now, “What is the process?,” you may ask. Well, we will tell ya.
There are eight of us on staff currently at Coalfield Sports (find that in the about section).
We each anonymously voted how we envision the season playing out with the district standings.
We decided to get started with the Mountain 7 this week.
Here are the results:
1. Ridgeview (6)
2. Union (2)
3. Abingdon
4. John Battle
5. Lee
6. Central
7. Gate City
Our experts believe this is the year Ridgeview takes over the M7. Ridgeview needs to find a quarterback to pair up with their star running back Trenton Adkins. If they can find that QB, they will be fine. Get to Rose Ridge this year, you won’t regret it. Actually, head up there when Union comes to town. Get there early, parking will be an issue with a game of that magnitude.
Speaking of Union, they have to learn how to live without James Mitchell. They do get back their quarterback Turner, who was injured in week two last season, though. They also have one of the top coaches in the area in Travis Turner, so they won’t fall too far.
Abingdon at three could be a little high. Changing coaches a week before practices start is rough. They are the biggest team in the district, which is to their advantage. It will be interesting to see how they handle the change.
Battle had a great year in 2017. They put up points, but also gave up some points. Not much word out of that part of Bristol this year, so the jury is still out on the Trojans.
Lee and Central are interchangeable. Central lost their Mr. Everything, Mullins, but then again, he did not play last year. Lee is a similar situation to Battle in the fact that there’s not much news out of the western-most county in the Commonwealth.
Gate City… is Gate City. They have issues both inside and outside their program. Reed coming over from Abingdon could help…or could cause the outside noise to get even louder, if that is possible.
