After starting the season 3-0, the Honaker Tigers have hit a two-game losing skid.
The Tigers are indeed into the meat of their schedule and it will not get ant easier when the 3-2 J.I. Burton Raiders travel to Fuller Field for battle.
Honaker is coming off a 41-17 defeat at the hands of the George Wythe Maroons last week at Pendleton Field in Wytheville.
Behind a Cole Simmons and his 166-yard, three-touchdown performance on the ground, the Maroons outgained the Tigers in total offense, 349-218.… Read the rest

The epicenter for the largest upset in the Commonwealth of Virginia was in Oakwood last Friday night.
The Twin Valley Panthers sat at 3-1 and were ready to play host to a Craig County Rockets team that had lost 30 consecutive football games.
A win over Craig County would move the Panthers to their best start in school history with a 4-1 record.
After being so dominant against Northwood a week earlier in a 52-30 victory, how could Twin Valley let the Rockets squeak through the cracks?… Read the rest

At the Honaker Tigers media day, Doug Hubbard said that the Black Diamond District was Grundy’s until someone knocked them off.
Luckily for Hubbard, his Tigers will get a chance to do just that in the CoalfieldSports.com Game of the Week as Honaker travels to Grundy.
“I expect them to be ready to play. I expect both teams to be ready. I think it’s gonna be a great atmosphere,” Hubbard said Wednesday.… Read the rest

After a two game skid, the Hurley Rebels retreated home to Smiley Ratliff Field at The Cliff with hopes to return to the win column.
Much to the liking of the Rebels faithful, Hurley opened their home slate with a 16-6 victory over the RiverView Raiders last Thursday.
This game, as many throughout the region, was pushed up a day in order to say ahead of the expected weather of Hurricane Florence.… Read the rest

Was that Brandon Lester or a coal truck barreling through Oakwood last Thursday?
If you ask Chris Duble and the Northwood Panthers, they would vouch that Lester and coal truck are synonyms.
In a 52-30 Twin Valley victory, Lester could not have performed at a higher level. The senior tailback scored 38 of Twin Valley’s 52 points a week ago. The stat line was one that you may have read on your NCAA Football video game on your Heisman campaign in 2013.… Read the rest

The past two weeks in Buchanan County have been filled with talks about how Grundy tailback Gabe Fiser has broken the school record for rushing yards in a game in back to back weeks.
However, after Grundy’s 43-14 win over Lebanon, there was a lot of chatter about Golden Wave WR/DB Jake McCoy.
The Grundy junior had a stellar night on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball against the Pioneers.… Read the rest

A week removed from a 40-12 interstate victory over the RiverView (WV) Raiders, Grundy travels to take on former Southwest District rival Lebanon.
Lebanon stands at 0-2 after falling in the Coal Bowl to Honaker, 35-28, in week one and taking a 48-8 thumping by the Lee Generals in week two.
Seth Stanley has run like a mad man for the Pioneers in the early onset of the season.… Read the rest

The way Grundy running back Gabe Fiser was moving Friday night, he probably could’ve outran the bus back across Route 83 on its trip back from Bradshaw.
Behind Fiser’s 336 yards—a new Grundy school record—and three touchdowns, the Golden Wave returned from River View (WV) with a 40-12 victory. The performance from the senior tailback has given him the nod as CoalfieldSports.com’s Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2.
“It’s an honor, honestly,” Fiser said.… Read the rest
