Giles falls to Glenvar on senior night

It was a tough night for ten Spartan seniors. Not only did they play their last game at Stephen C. Ragsdale Field, but they fell to their district rivals, Glenvar (9-0, 5-0). The Highlander offense started wearing Giles (4-5, 2-3) down in the second quarter, and they showed that their defense is as good as advertised, leaving Pearisburg with a 38-6 victory. Much of first quarter consisted of three-and-outs for both teams, and it appeared that this game would be a defensive battle. … Read the rest

Giles, Glenvar set for district showdown in Pearisburg

Since 2011, the Three Rivers District champion has either been Giles or Glenvar. Giles had won 20 straight against Glenvar before falling to them in the 2014 playoffs. It was at that time the two turned into district rivals. The Highlanders went on a four game winning streak against the Spartans before Giles pulled off the upset last season in Salem, giving Glenvar their first loss. While the Spartans have been perrenial contenders for decades, the Highlanders have made themselves known across the region more recently.… Read the rest

With a losing record near the end of the season, the Spartans knew how important a win over Carroll County would be. Giles left Tommy Thompson Field on Saturday with a 33-13 victory over the Cavaliers to keep their post season hopes alive. Giles turns attention to Carroll County

After giving up a 28-point lead and falling to James River last week, many wonder what the mindset is for the Spartan players and coaches. Giles dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Three Rivers District. There was drama from the fans after the game as the coaches walked off the field, as well as arguments on social media about the coaching staff. Battling multiple injuries along with a small turnout of athletes, the Spartan coaches are limited on what players they can put where.… Read the rest

James River spoils homecoming in Giles

The Spartan faithful were in shock after witnessing Giles (3-4, 1-2) surrender a 28-0 lead against James River (5-1, 1-1). The Knights scored 36 unanswered points and completely shut the single-wing offense down in the second half, leaving Steven C. Ragsdale with a 36-28 victory to spoil homecoming in Pearisburg. There is not much history between Giles and James River, as the two have played each other five times since 1980 with Giles leading the series 4-1.
