The Hogo used to run straight through Wytheville. However, with George Wythe’s move to the Mountain Empire District, it’s opened the door for new blood at the top.

With a bevy of benefit games on the docket this week, perhaps the most anticipated of those will occur Friday night on Rose Ridge. The marquee features the defending 1A state runner up, Chilhowie Warriors and the Ridgeview Wolfpack.
The Wolfpack received much attention in the preseason with a two-headed monster in the backfield with sophomore Trenton Adkins and senior Matthew Sexton.… 
Union High School has had one head coach since its inception in 2011. That coach is Travis Turner, whose name has been a staple in Wise County for decades. Turner, a native of Appalachia, was a star quarterback who won a state title as a signal caller under his dad, legendary coach Tom Turner. The quarterback turned coach was hired in part to smooth over the consolidation of Appalachia and Powell Valley.… 
On Thursday night August 16th, the Union Bears will travel to Bristol to take on the Virginia High Bearcats for 2018’s benefit game. This will be the second consecutive year that these two teams have locked horns in the final tune-up before the start of the regular season.
Last year’s contest was closer than expected. It also served as a pretty accurate forecast of things to come. Union not only proved that they had one of the top high school football players in the state, they also proved they had a nearly impenetrable defense.…

There’s a new sheriff in town.
His name is Garrett Amburgey.
With the sudden departure of head coach Darren Reed a week before practice began, the Abingdon Falcons found themselves in limbo and wondering which way the 2018 season would turn. Luckily, a familiar face appeared. Former Falcon offensive coordinator, Garrett Amburgey, returns to the friendly confines of Falcon Stadium to lead the 2018 Abingdon squad as their new head coach.…

For most teams, starting a season 1-4 would foreshadow a death sentence. For the 2017 J.I. Burton Raiders, the season ended with a flurry of wins. The Raiders finished their last five games with a 4-1 record. This put the Raiders at 5-5 at season’s end, which was good enough to qualify for the playoffs.…
