Galax thumps Narrows in Region C rematch

In 2017, the Region 1C championship between the Maroon Tide and Green Wave was a nail-bitter that ended with a 28-27 Galax victory. The two met up again in this year’s regional championship, but the Maroon Tide had control of this game before it even hit halftime. Galax (11-2) racked up 402 yards of total offense and held Narrows (10-3) to just 67 total yards of offense. Radford dethrones Appomattox, advances to semifinals

It was a busy Saturday in the New River Valley. Two high school regional championships were played along with Virginia Tech and Virginia battling for the Commonwealth Cup. Top-seeded Radford played host to the third-seeded Appomattox Raiders for the Region 2C Championship. As we approach the final two weeks of high school football, one thing is certain.  Appomattox will not contend for the Class 2A state title. Bobcats look to end Appomattox’s domination of Class 2

Not many people expected Radford and Appomattox to still be playing this late in the post season. Radford finished 2017 with a 2-8 record and did not make it into the post season. For Appomattox, even though they won their third-straight state championship last year, many expected them to have a rebuilding season as they lost most of their talented senior athletes. This time last year, Galax and Narrows were preparing to go to battle for the Region 1C championship. In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Maroon Tide escaped Ragsdale Field with a 28-27 victory over the Green Wave. Narrows avenges regular season loss to Fightin’ Blues

In the final week of the regular season, Parry McCleur (7-5) defeated Narrows (10-2) 35-34 to claim a share of the Pioneer District title. In the second round of the Region 1C playoffs, the Green Wave got revenge on their district foe, as they rolled the Fighting Blues 56-28. Matthew Morgan accounted for three scores in the Green Wave victory. Narrows jumped out to a 14-0 lead as Morgan scored twice from one-yard out.… Read the rest

Cougars rally isn’t enough to top Bruins

Midway through the third quarter fans started leaving Christiansburg High School. Blacksburg (12-0) jumped out to a 28-0 lead over Pulaski (8-4) after a pick six from Brian Mitchell. Those same fans were in shock when hearing that the Cougars rallied back with 21 unanswered points and were set up in scoring position on their last drive. Brown, Vaught lead Galax past the Maroons

The saying, ‘It’s hard to beat the same team twice,’ was not the case for the Maroon Tide. After escaping with a 21-14 victory in week seven, Galax blasted the Maroons 42-14 in the post season rematch. Blake Brown and Caxton Vaught combined for 349 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lead top-seeded Galax (10-2) over George Wythe (7-5). Hawks soar into battle with rabid Bobcats

Radford looks to continue their Cinderella story as the top-seeded Bobcats get to host their second playoff game this week against the Gretna Hawks in a rematch from week four. Radford (10-1) is on a nine-game winning streak since falling to Galax in week two. Since that game, the Bobcats have dominated most of their opponents, only allowing seven points per game while scoring nearly 30 points per game. Radford blanked Fort Chiswell 22-0 last Thursday for their first playoff win since 2015.… Read the rest

SHADES OF MAROON: George Wythe set for battle with Galax

As teams advance to the second round of the regional playoffs, the games start getting tougher. You also begin to see multiple rematches take place. This week, Galax (9-2) and George Wythe (7-4), two powerhouse programs from Region 1C, will battle for the second time this season. Galax won the first meeting in week seven, 21-14. Pulaski hopes to take advantage of second chance against Blacksburg

While Blacksburg (11-0) is expected to make it to the Region 4D championship, they cannot look past their district foe Pulaski (8-3). These two are the only teams remaining from the River Ridge District as Jefferson Forrest shocked the region by eliminating three-time defending 4A champion Salem. The Bruins squeezed out a 21-14 victory over the Cougars in week eight. The contest started as a shootout in the first half, but ended with a scoreless second half for both teams.… Read the rest
