What to watch for:

Bluefield:

In his 33rd season, coach Fred Simon has Bluefield off to a scorching hot start with the Beavers sitting at 6-0 & ranked #2 in the WVSSAC AA rankings. The Beavers finished 14-0 in 2017 and won the AA state championship. Second year signal-caller Chandler Cooper leads the Beavers’ offense. Cooper threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns in the Beavers’ 44-10 win over Richlands two weeks ago. In that game, the Beavers showed off their stacked backfield with Ja’mere “Juice” Edwards rushing for 102 yards and one touchdown, JJ Davis with 138 yards and one score and fullback Arnold Martin added 60 yards and score of his own. Ronnell Blevins was Cooper’s favorite receiver on the night with two catches for 105 yards and one score. Isaiah Johnson, the #7 overall player in the country for the class of 2021, is also a talented receiver and excels at picking down opposing receivers from his defensive back position. Sean Martin, Drake Mullins and Deiyantei Powell have been standouts on defense for Bluefield. Kicker Kaulin Parris is perfect on field goals for the Beavers.

Lord Botetourt:

Lord Botetourt will be making its first trip to Mitchell Stadium. Jamie Harless, in his 7th season as the head coach of the Cavaliers, has the Cavs at 4-2. The only blemishes on their record were one score losses to Blacksburg and Northside. Hunter Rice leads the Cavaliers’ offense on the ground. The 5-foot-11, 215-pound sophomore had a huge game vs. Western Albemarle as he carried 24 times for a game-high 161 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense. James-Ryan Salvi was 6-of-9 passing for 198 yards and a pair of scores. Jake Dewease was his favorite target that game as he had two catches for 145 yards and both touchdown grabs.
