Throughout the season, we will select five games each week for our weekly pick’em segment on the SWVA Sports Podcast. Co-Hosts Ryan Dye and Brady Hess will keep a running total of their picks along with a collective total of the weekly guest picker!

With so many great games each week to choose from, we’re going to need your help in selecting the Coalfield Sports’ Game of the Week! So while you’re here, scroll to the bottom to cast your vote for week two!

Virginia High at Tennessee High:

The 102nd edition of this state-line rivalry will take place in the Stone Castle in the Volunteer state.

The Vikings defeated the Bearcats by a score of 34-20 in 2017. Tennessee High holds a 72-25-1 series advantage.

Virginia comes into the matchup with a 2-0 record, after consecutive 7-point wins vs. Tazewell & John Battle to begin the season. Senior RB/LB Aaron Rose has been the main factor in the Bearcats’ hot start, rushing for 343 yards and four touchdowns.

Tennesee is sporting a 2-1 record with a 41-0 win over Lee and a 19-16 upset win vs. Knoxville Central. Junior quarterback Cole McBrayer will lead the Vikings on offense. McBrayer threw for five touchdowns in the Vikings win over Lee.

Twin Valley at Honaker:

In a battle of two undefeated teams; this will be the 18th matchup between these Black Diamond District rivals.

Twin Valley has opened with wins against Jenkins(KY) and Montcalm(WV). The Panthers are led by the talented duo of Tylor Keen & Brandon Lester, both of which have been Coalfield Sports’ Player of the Week nominees.

Honaker has started their season by sweeping both of their Russell County rivals. The Tigers are led by Quarterback Levi Miller and tailback Trevor Dye, who have accounted for seven of their eight touchdowns this season.

Abingdon at Pulaski:

Abingdon will travel north on I-81 to take on Pulaski County in this Coalfield Sports’ Top 10 matchup.

Abingdon comes into the game with a 2-0 record after wins over John Battle & Gate City. The Falcons are led by first year head coach Garrett Amburgey and their strong armed quarterback, Gabe Boothe.

Pulaski County dropped a heart breaker in the opener 29-28 against Northside, but were able to bounce back and demolish William Fleming 51-0 this past friday. The Cougars are led by Kent State commit E.J. Horton, a Coalfield Sports’ Offensive Player of the Week nominee, who had over 300 all purpose yards and four touchdowns against William Fleming.

Graham at Giles:

The 9th game of this series in 2017 was a dramatic one, with the G-Men pulling out a win in overtime vs. the Spartans to win 35-28.

Graham opened the season with a 38-14 loss against rival Bluefield, before bouncing back to win 41-19 vs. Tazewell on friday. The G-Men are led by Purdue commit Cameron Allen, who has accounted for 650 total yards and 4 touchdowns in the first two games from his quarterback position.

Giles didn’t fare too well against Blacksburg in their opener, but was able to grind out a 33-14 win in week two vs. Christiansburg.  The Spartans are led by Chaston Ratcliff, who had 156 yards and two touchdowns in their first win of the season.

George Wythe at Marion:

Both teams come into this interstate 81 matchup with 1-1 records.

George Wythe dropped their opener against Radford but played a very impressive defensive game in their 6-2 win vs. cross-county Fort Chiswell in week two. Jacquez Younger caught a 69-yard TD pass from Cole Simmons in the second quarter to help the Maroons pick up their first win.

Marion dropped their first game against one of thier cross-county rivals, the  Chilhowie Warriors, but were able to beat up on their other Smyth County opponent, Northwood, in week two. Quarterback Tanner Tate led the Scarlet Hurricanes to the 57-12 win by accounting for four total touchdowns.
