Virginia High at Tazewell:

Opening our season slate this Thursday will be the 75th meeting between the Virginia High Bearcats & the Tazewell Bulldogs.

The Bearcats from Bristol return an experienced team, which includes 1st team all-region D linebacker, Aaron Rose, as well as their talented quarterback, Jamie Lathrop.

Tazewell returns all but three players from last season. Expect sophomore captains Chancellor Harris and Jayden Taylor to have a big impact for Coach J’Me Harris’ young Bulldogs.

Ridgeview at Grundy:

The Ridgeview Wolfpack will travel to Nelson Memorial Field to take on the Grundy Golden Wave to start the 2018 season.

Ridgeview opens the season with high expectations, after finishing the 2017 regular season with a 9-1 record. The Wolfpack are led by Division 1 prospect Trenton Adkins and newcomer Matthew Sexton, a transfer from Eastside.

Grundy, the reigning Black Diamond District champions, enters 2018 with a goal of beating their 7-4 records from the past two seasons. Grundy returns their all region halfback, Gabe Fiser, along with senior quarterback Derrick Endicott.

Bluefield at Graham:

There’s not much that can be said about this iconic rivalry game that hasn’t already been said over the years.

Bluefield, the reigning WV state champions in AA, returns the majority of their team from 2017. The Beavers will look to Juice Edwards and Arnold Martin to replace the production of Marshall’s Mookie Collier & Pitt’s Truck Edwards.

Graham, looking to avenge their dramatic 17-14 loss to their cross town rivals, is led on both sides of the ball by Purdue University commit Cameron Allen. Watch for junior Devin Lester to attempt to fill the play making void for the G-Men left by current Marshall University player Taymon Cooke.

Chilhowie at Marion:

The Chilhowie Warriors will visit the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes for the 81st edition of this Smyth County rivalry.

Chilhowie, the reigning state runner-ups in 1A, look to build on their success from their historic season. The Warriors are led by Region D Offensive Player of the Year, Greg Sanchez and Defensive Player of the Year, Logan Branson. Chilhowie looks to avenge their 21-16 loss to Marion last season.

The Scarlet Hurricanes, coming off an impressive 9-3 season, are hoping to extend their win steak to three over the rival Warriors. Marion will be hard pressed to replicate the production from last season amassed by Kelby Ford, but junior Easton Medley hopes to fill those shoes.

Lebanon at Honaker:

The Pioneers and the Tigers both come into 2018 with high hopes after disappointing 2017 seasons.

Lebanon was able to get the best of Honaker to open last season, with a 34-16 “Coal Bowl” win. Senior Seth Stanley returns to lead the Pioneers’ offense after scoring two touchdowns against the Tigers in last season’s matchup.

Honaker looks to rebound after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Tigers are led on offense by Trevor Dye, who accounted for close to 1,400 yards in 2017.

      1. Ridgeview is much bigger then grundy and more on offense grundy has a good back not much at passing losing mr everything in mcnutt on offense and defense will be the difference

  1. i dont see it being close at all ridgeview is much bigger more of a threat on offense grundy has a good back with not much of a passing game not sure they will hold up in a physical game being undersized not to consider they lost mcnutt that will be a big hit on offense and defense
